Building A New IC Base

At a fairly early stage of the game the player base decided that they weren't content to just acquire and sell on scientific data as loot, they wanted to dig into it and do their own research into it. To that end they acquired The Farm and established some very basic laboratories there. They've done significant work since then, expanding the facilities and done work for powerful NPCs that paid them in more upgrades. They've subsequently acquired The Manor House as more of a social space and hangout, and done work to upgrade that. The rules here are intended to provide that same option to anyone else. When building a new space though please keep in mind that the original Farm took somewhere in the region of 15 full downtimes to complete, and the workload was spread across about 20 characters. Smaller scale projects will take a lot less, but this is still not an overnight task.

Step 1 - Site

Every base needs a start point. Whilst the towns and villages are largely out of bounds due to military or corporate occupation, the Zone is littered with farm buildings, pubs, hiking barns and other isolated buildings. Most of these are occupied by gangs and factions, others serve as communal sleeping spaces for freelancers not wanting to sleep rough and willing to take a turn on watch. Finding something unoccupied can be hard work. Tell the game team how much space you want and the kind of building you're after, we'll come up with options.

If you're trying to stay hidden then there are abandoned bunkers, put in place by corporations that have since left the Zone. If you want one of these it will take some searching, and there is always the possibility the company will come back for it someday.

If you're willing to devote the time, building a shack or digging out a bunker might be a better idea, and it's a lot harder for anyone else to find.* Step 2 - Defences
At a bare minimum you're going to leave the space for one full weekend in eight to attend events. What are you going to do to stop someone trashing the place while you're not home? Being hard to find is the easiest option but you will need to give this some thought. Step 3 - Living Facilities The vast majority of freelancers sleep rough or in communal barns. The rich rent beds at the bar. If you are intending to live in your new space you will need basic facilities. You can also go beyond the basics and additional facilities may have mechanical benefits.**

Decent bedWhen paired up with heating of some kind it will usually confer a +10 health bonus for the next event.
HeatingYou might be able to rig up radiators, you might be able to heavily insulate a shed and then light a fire, but any means of keeping the place warm counts. Paired with a good bed it provides a +10 health bonus
CookingHaving a dedicated space for an open fire with pot stands or grills, a proper barbeque or scratch built oven can also confer health bonuses when coupled with suitable food supplies. It will halve lifestyle costs between events.
